One Eye On The Fire, One Eye On The Flood
30 x 30 in. Oil on panel. 2020.
In this piece we see the sunset peering through the lingering smoke of a prescribed burn, and a strip of the sunset reflecting off the surf of the ocean. This piece is simply about the complexity of nature and the further intricacies of human nature within it. The figure, with its upward gaze and clenched jaw, is simultaneously at peace and unrest. The landscape is at once beautiful and volatile. The cliche’ phrase, “If it’s not one thing, it’s another” is the underlying tone here. Life is an on-going series of challenges often out of our control and unjust, and finding a balance requires continual adaptation and growth. Once we put out the fire, the flood begins lapping at our feet, so at least look up and soak in the colors of the sunset.
